It typically affects the outside of the elbows, knees or scalp, though it can appear on any location. Some people report that psoriasis is itchy, burns and stings. Psoriasis is associated with other serious health conditions, such as diabetes, heart disease and depression.
There are no special blood tests or tools to diagnose psoriasis. A dermatologist usually examines the affected skin and determines if it is psoriasis.
Vitiligo is characterized by loss of pigment in patches of the body. Vitiligo provides little physical discomfort, though it is often quite distressing. Vitiligo is considered an autoimmune process in which the body destroys its own pigment.
Narrowband UVB light, or Phototherapy, can help create repigmentation. It is currently considered the “gold standard” treatment when vitiligo covers 20% or more of the body.
